Champions of Education Honorees Announced

August 03, 2015

On Tuesday, October 27 the DPS Foundation will host its second Champions of Education recognition event. The event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the MGM Grand Hotel. At that time we will honor Ed Deeb, Rochelle Riley, and Matt Simoncini. Each of these individuals has played an important role in fostering high quality education for young people in the city of Detroit.

Because of Ed Deeb thousands of young people enjoy a day on Belle Isle at Metro Detroit Youth Day each summer. Additionally Ed has been a stalwart supporter of his alma mater, Eastern High School (now Martin Luther King High). He is an active supporter of the Foundation and chairs our Alumni Advisory Board.

All of us know the commitment that Rochelle Riley has shown to education through her many columns in the Detroit Free Press. She has been a consistent voice for change, for engagement, and for community action in support of our students. Her Every December Fundraiser for Literacy brings hundreds of supporters together to help address adult and childhood literacy in the city.

Matt Simoncini leads one of the major corporations in our city that is the model of good corporate citizenship. With his leadership, the Lear Corporation has adopted two schools in the district for them to be able to have afterschool programs for their students, increased supplies and materials, out of class experiences, and one-on-one mentoring. His commitment to education has extended beyond the public schools to Focus: HOPE, where he has supported their educational programs.

Sponsorship opportunities and individual ticket purchases are now available click here for more information.  We hope that you will join us for the evening as we honor these Champions of Education and present a showcase of student talent.
