Group Biography

The DSA Male Ensemble – Vision is comprised of 30 young men who attend the Detroit School of Arts (DSA). Its’ mission is to bring to audiences a variety of genres of music in a most educational, entertaining and professional manner.

The ensemble has been in existence for over seventeen years. During this time the group has performed at the Maestro Music Festival (ranking second nationally and internationally), the Heritage festival (ranking first place), and the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) district and state festivals receiving the rating of superior. The group has had the honor of performing at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan (May 2006). In December of 2007 the group was invited and performed at the governor’s residence (former Gov. Jennifer Granholm).In January (2010), the group had the opportunity to perform at the swearing –in ceremony for Mayor Dave Bing (Detroit) .The group had the opportunity in November 2012 to perform with the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club at their annual Brothers in Song concert. This group has also performed for various civic and church events in and around the Detroit metropolitan area.

This ensemble has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. They have performed with Ms. Kathleen Battle and for Sir Sidney Poitier.  They have also had the opportunity to perform for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument Foundation fundraiser. Each year the young men have the opportunity to travel the country visiting colleges and auditioning for scholarships. This year 2016 will be performing in the Iholmbe Choral festival in South Africa, July 20 – 31. They will perform in Johannesburg, Soweto, Cape Town and Pretoria.

The ensemble is under the direction of Ms. Cheryl W. Valentine. Ms. Valentine is a graduate of Detroit’s Cass Technical High School. She received her B.A. degree from Virginia Union University (Richmond, Virginia) and her Masters in the Arts of Teaching from Marygrove College (Detroit, Michigan).She has taught in the Detroit Public Schools for over thirty years. She is a member and the Director of the music ministry at Sanctuary Fellowship Baptist Church (Rev. Dr. Keith L. Whitney, Pastor).
