On April 19, 2021; the American Heart Association, in collaboration with the Detroit Public Schools Foundation (DPS Foundation) and the Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Detroit International Academy for Young Women (DIA), hosted Virtual STEM Goes Red Day at the DIA. Uniquely, DIA is a District application school, and the only all-girls public school within the State of Michigan. The 91 students, grades 6th-12th and their teachers participated in the day-long virtual event filled with Main Events, Mentoring Sessions, and Dance Breaks, to keep their hearts pumping! Speakers in a variety of STEM fields shared their experiences, and what motivated them to seek higher education and employment in STEM. Mentors included our President and CEO, Ms. Pamela J. Moore, B.S. Finance and MBA.
Mr. Jordan Bass, a Fashion Designer, gave a fascinating presentation entitled The Math Behind Design. He enjoyed math as a K-12 student and incorporated his love of math with the high heels women wear on the Fashion Catwalk, and how the heels height and width could affect gravity; Slope = Rise over Run. Other presentations were from Interventional Cardiology Fellow-Dr. Lizbeth R. Brice, on An Exploration of the Human Heart, and the event closed with a keynote presentation from Ms. Kathleen Nelson, Principal Lead Solutions Program Management at Google. ITC Holdings was the Presenting Sponsor; gifting items for the goody bags given to the students and their Teachers.
